Police Respond to Ohio State ‘Active Shooter’:

A suspect is dead after an attack on Ohio State University’s campus, a federal law enforcement official said. Witness accounts suggest the attack involved a knife and a car, an official said. Several people were taken to hospitals. A “shelter in place” order was lifted and the scene was secured, the school tweeted. Student Jacob Bower told CNN the attacker “was completely silent, which was very creepy.” “He pulled a large knife and started chasing people around trying to attack them,” Bower said, adding that an officer saved many lives by shooting the attacker.

Trump Claims, With No Evidence, That ‘Millions of People’ Voted Illegally:

President-elect Donald J. Trump said on Sunday that he had fallen short in the popular vote in the general election only because millions of people had voted illegally, leveling the baseless claim as part of a daylong storm of Twitter posts voicing anger about a three-state recount push. “In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally,” Mr. Trump wrote Sunday afternoon. The series of posts came one day after Hillary Clinton’s campaign said it would participate in a recount effort being undertaken in Wisconsin, and potentially in similar pushes in Michigan and Pennsylvania, by Jill Stein, who was the Green Party candidate. Mr. Trump’s statements revived claims he made during the campaign, as polls suggested he was losing to Mrs. Clinton, about a rigged and corrupt system.

Report: Trump ‘Furious’ at Kellyanne’s Romney Attack:

President-elect Donald Trump is “furious” at spokeswomanKellyanne Conway’s comments knocking Mitt Romney during her TV appearances Sunday, MSNBC reported on Morning Joe early Monday. Conway’s comments suggested that The Donald had “betrayed” his supporters by considering Romney for the secretary of State post. “Kellyanne went rogue at Donald Trump’s expense at the worst possible time,” a source told MSNBC. “Instead of driving Donald Trump’s message, she’s pushing her own agenda,” a source said. “It’s dangerous.” The show’s senior producer, Jesse Rodriguez, tweeted later that Conway responded to the Morning Joe report, calling it “false” and “sexist.”

Judge Allows Dylann Roof to Represent Himself:

Dylann Roof, the man accused of fatally shooting nine worshippers at a historically black church in South Carolina last June, filed a motion to represent himself in court and forgo a lawyer for his federal trial in which he will face the death penalty. Appearing in court Monday morning, Roof said he feels competent enough to represent himself, according to reporters who tweeted from the courtroom. The judge approved the motion, telling Roof that it would serve him better to have an attorney represent him, adding it was “strategically unwise” even though he feels that Roof is competent enough. Jury selection for Roof’s trial was slated to begin Monday at 9 a.m.

Trump Threatens to Cut New Cuba Ties:

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday morning threatened to put an end to President Barack Obama’s efforts to normalize relations with Cuba. The threat comes three days after the death of the island nation’s former leader, Fidel Castro. “If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban/American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate deal,” Trump tweeted. Republicans vociferously criticized Obama’s moves, starting in 2014, to normalize relations with the communist country. Embassies have since opened in Washington and Havana, as Obama has indicated he wants to end the U.S. trade embargo. Meanwhile, American Airlines and JetBlue on Monday flew commercial routes from New York and Miami to Havana for the first time in decades.

Gov’t Will Not Forcibly Remove Pipeline Protesters:

The Army Corps of Engineers said Sunday that it “has no plans for forcible removal” of protesters occupying land near the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota, the Associated Press reported. The statement comes after the Corps set a deadline of Dec. 5 earlier this week for the area to be cleared. Rather than shutting down the protesters’ camp, however, the Corps has said it wants a “peaceful and orderly transition” of demonstrators to a “safer location.” Protesters have taken over tribal land surrounding the site of the $3.8 billion pipeline project, which it argues threatens sacred sites and drinking water of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. Protests have turned increasingly violent in recent weeks, with clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators. On Saturday, protesters responded to the news that they were being ordered out by vowing to stay put, adding that the Corps’ order would only escalate tensions with police.

Syrian Troops Capture Major Aleppo Neighborhood:

Syrian troops have overtaken a major neighborhood in Aleppo, state media reports. The development means that a large northern section of the city—including 10 neighborhoods and more than 3,000 buildings—is back under government control. Rami Abdurrahman, of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said nearly 30 percent of Aleppo’s previously rebel-held areas are now back in state control. Russia’s defense ministry said at least 100 rebels relinquished their weapons and left the city. President Bashar al-Assad’s government has been fighting to recapture Aleppo from rebels since 2012, with estimates of more than 30,000 people killed in that time.

‘Moana’ 2nd Best Thanksgiving Debut Ever:

The new Disney film Moana earned $81.1 million over the five-day holiday weekend and $55.5 million on Saturday and Sunday, cruising to the top of this year’s Thanksgiving box office. The  film now ranks as the second biggest Thanksgiving debut after the Disney hit Frozen. “We are working with the greatest brands and we’re doing big, broad storytelling that resonates domestically, but has the power to transcend borders and languages and cultures around the world,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s distribution chief. Allied, a Paramount film starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard, didn’t fare as well, pulling in $18 million over the same five-day period and $13 million over the weekend. Bad Santa 2 earned just $9 million and $6.1 million, respectively, and Warren Beatty’s Rules Don’t Apply, a romantic-comedy about Howard Hughes, earned a sad $2.2 million over the five-day weekend.

LBN-COMMENTARY by Dr. Zuhdi Jasser: Following the election of Donald J. Trump, the Left went into a veritable frenzy – from predicting that president-elect Trump will rule like the worst dictators in history to organizing mass protests not just of his comments, but of the election itself. To what specific end? No one knows. Yet, he has not governed for one day. While I am a life-long conservative and was not a Trump supporter, and did not vote for him (choosing instead to write my choice in), I take serious and concerned pause at the tone of the far left in the wake of the election. While I certainly had problems with  the tone and content of some of the president-elect’s comments during the election, including about Muslims, I see the left’s ratcheting up of fear and hysteria with outright fabrication of various policies as symptomatic of the deeper pathology within their camp; namely, the use and manipulation of minority and marginalized identity groups to further their cause. Even some camps within the left itself, in its own post-mortem autopsies, is beginning to question the harm of its blind adherence to identity politics.

Trump on Recount: ‘Nothing Will Change’:

Donald Trump responded again to the Green Party-fueled recount in Wisconsin, saying it will not change the outcome of the race in that state, which he won by 27,000 votes. “Hillary Clinton conceded the election when she called me just prior to the victory speech and after the results came in. Nothing will change,” Trump tweeted early Sunday morning. Clinton’s campaign team has since joined the recount effort, spearheaded by the Green Party’s Jill Stein, in order to “ensure that it is fair to all sides.” Stein has also pledged to file for recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania—two other heavily Democratic states that Trump won. In a later tweetstorm, Trump quoted Hillary Clinton when she said during the campaign that Trump had to accept the results of the election no matter what, and separately when she said after the election that Trump is owed “an open mind and the chance to lead.” He added: “So much time and money will be spent—same result! Sad.”

Syrian Gov’t Retakes Second Eastern Aleppo District:

Syrian government soldiers have retaken a second district in eastern Aleppo, a day after regime forces took back the largest rebel-held area in the eastern part of the besieged city. The army said it now controls the area of Jabal Badro, after seizing control of Hanano on Saturday. The Syrian regime has now spent the past two weeks attempting to seize the rebel stronghold of eastern Aleppo, where as many as 275,000 people live. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 219 civilians, including 27 children, have died so far in the offensive.

Israeli Airstrike Kills 4 ISIS Fighters:

An Israeli strike killed four ISIS fighters in the Syrian Golan Heights on Sunday, the country’s military said. The strike was called after Israeli troops came under fire in the region. No Israeli soldiers were injured in the attack. The militants were believed to be members of the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, which the U.S. considers to be a terrorist organization and which has pledged allegiance to ISIS. Parts of Golan Heights are controlled by Israel, taken from Syria in 1967. The Israeli soldiers were on their side of the border when they were shot at.

LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***For more than a decade, Coca-Cola, Pepsi and other beverage companies have fought mightily against efforts to tax sugary sodas, defeating more than three dozen such proposals around the country. Cook County, Ill., followed a few days later, bringing a soft-drink tax to Chicago and surrounding areas. They are joining Berkeley, Calif., which passed a tax two years ago, and Philadelphia, which passed one in June, bringing to seven the number of American communities with soda taxes.

LBN-SPOTLIGHT: These 10 groundbreaking restaurants changed how we dine —

LBN-COMMENTARY by Maureen Dowd: Donald Trump pulled off one of the greatest political feats in modern history by defeating Hillary Clinton and the vaunted Clinton machine. The election was a complete repudiation of Barack Obama: his fantasy world of political correctness, the politicization of the Justice Department and the I.R.S., an out-of-control E.P.A., his neutering of the military, his nonsupport of the police and his fixation on things like transgender bathrooms. Since he became president, his party has lost 63 House seats, 10 Senate seats and 14 governorships. The country had signaled strongly in the last two midterms that they were not happy. The Dems’ answer was to give them more of the same from a person they did not like or trust. Preaching — and pandering — with a message of inclusion, the Democrats have instead become a party where incivility and bad manners are taken for granted, rudeness is routine, religion is mocked and there is absolutely no respect for a differing opinion. This did not go down well in the Midwest, where Trump flipped three blue states and 44 electoral votes.

LBN-COMMENTARY by James Edward Sved (Founder, Herald de Paris): “The world is dangerously distracted,” PR Guru Michael Levine once told me, “People are masturbating digitally, and acting with vapid inanity.”  That was in 2009.  It may as well have been last week, and Levine may as well have been talking about 2016 and the recent presidential election.  “There’s no filter,” Levine added back then, “Any jackass in pajamas can go out there and say whatever they want.”  And there it is – Michael Levine predicted our National conundrum – President-Elect Donald Trump, an arrogant, insecure, digital bully who Tweets anything and everything that comes into his mind. Who fights with a Broadway musical?  Who hosts Saturday Night Live and then takes offense at … Saturday Night Live?  Anyone who has watched the show, let alone anyone who has hosted it, knows that if there is an elephant in the room, Lorne Michaels will exploit it.  Mr. Trump, you are currently the elephant.  Get used to it.  And you have your hands full if you are going to start sparring verbally with Alec Baldwin, a man known for making 9 year olds cry.

Trump Offers Lackluster Response to Castro’s Death:

After hundreds of Cubans took to the streets of Miami early Saturday to celebrate the death of Fidel Castro and U.S. politicians sounded off on his passing, President-elect Donald Trump had very little to say about it. “Fidel Castro is dead!” Trump wrote on Twitter hours after the news broke. Other U.S. politicians offered more substantial statements on the momentous news. Florida Governor Rick Scott expressed hope for “the future of Cuba” after Castro’s death, saying “the news should usher in an era of freedom, peace and human dignity.” New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez echoed Scott’s comments, saying while Castro’s “oppressive legacy will haunt the Cuban regime,” Cubans today are now “one step closer to achieving freedom.” Senator Ted Cruz took a more solemn tone, saying Castro’s death “cannot bring back his thousands of victims, nor can it bring comfort to their families.” Senator Marco Rubio said Cubans should use Castro’s death as motivation to continue to fight for freedom. “The dictator has died, but the dictatorship has not,” Rubio said. PresidentBarack Obama, who sought to mend ties with Cuba during his term, offered his condolences to the Castro family in a statement. Saying the White House extends “a hand of friendship to the Cuban people” after Castro’s death, Obama added that “history will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.”

Marco Rubio: Fidel Castro was an ‘evil, murderous dictator who inflicted misery and suffering’:

Hundreds took to the streets of Miami’s Little Havana early Saturday morning after the death of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro was announced. Drivers honked their horns, while others played drums and banged pots and pans. Many cheered as they waved American and Cuban flags. Among those who showed up was the city’s mayor, Tomas Regalado, a Cuban American who left the country at the age of 14 in 1962, three years after Fidel Castro rose to power. “I am proud of this celebration. The reason that I am proud of this celebration is because Fidel Castro hurt many generations of Cuba,” Regalado told WSVN 7. “What you see here is many, many young people that are celebrating because their fathers and grandfathers were hurt and attacked and killed by Fidel Castro.” Sen. Marco Rubio did not mince words when he weighed in on Castro’s death on Saturday. The Florida Republican called Castro an “evil, murderous dictator who inflicted misery and suffering on his own people” and turned Cuba into an “impoverished island prison.” “Sadly, Fidel Castro’s death does not mean freedom for the Cuban people or justice for the democratic activists, religious leaders, and political opponents he and his brother have jailed and persecuted,” Rubio said in a statement. “The dictator has died, but the dictatorship has not.”

Jill Stein Makes Wisconsin Recount Deadline:

Jill Stein, the Green Party nominee who is back in the news as she calls for a recount in Rust Belt states, managed to file a petition for a recount in Wisconsin just in time. Stein announced she had raised the $1.1 million required to pay for the recount, and the Wisconsin Election Commission tweeted Friday afternoon that they had received the recount petition. Stein is calling for recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan.

N. Dakota Pipeline Protest Camp to Be Shut Down by Dec. 5:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers warned the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe on Friday that protesters demonstrating against a controversial pipeline project in the area will be forced out by Dec. 5 as authorities reclaim the area. John W. Henderson, a district commander with the Corps, said the closure of the area north of the Cannonball River was necessary to “prevent death, illness or serious injury” to inhabitants in the camp caused by harsh winter weather, and to “protect the public from violent confrontations between protesters and law enforcement.” Opponents of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline have been occupying the area near the construction site for months, warning that the project may harm sacred Native American sites. Henderson’s announcement came as protests over the pipeline spread to a shopping mall in Bismarck, where more than 30 protesters were arrested Friday. Pipeline protesters held a rally in the Kirkwood Mall on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, to draw attention to the controversy over the pipeline. The rally saw demonstrators form a prayer circle right inside the entrance of the shopping center, ignoring demands from mall management to stop blocking the area. About 100 protesters took part in the rally, including members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and at least 33 were arrested for trespassing after refusing to get out of the way.

LBN-INVESTIGATES – COFFEE:
·  According to legend, coffee was discovered in the 9th century when an Ethiopian goat herder named Khaldi noticed that his normally lethargic goats were more excitable after they had nibbled the red berries from an evergreen tree. Khaldi took the berries to a Muslim holy man, who turned the raw fruit of the coffee tree into the delicious beverage.
·  Though coffee was discovered in Ethiopia around A.D. 850, it wasn’t until it spread to Mocha, Yemen, in around 1100 that it became firmly established as a popular drink. From Mocha (from which Mocha coffee derives its name), beans were shipped to India, Java, and eventually Europe in 1515. By 1675, England had more than 3,000 coffee houses.
·  Coffee was originally regarded as a wonder drug in Yemen and Arabia and was taken only at the advice of a doctor. Many saw coffee as a brain tonic or as a way to stimulate religious visions.
·  Arabs were the first to cultivate coffee trees on the Arabian Peninsula. Arabs typically roasted and boiled coffee, or qahwa, which is Arabic for “the wine of Islam.”
Coffee has mood-boosting effects
·  A 2011 study showed that women who drink two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day were 15% less likely to develop depression over a 10-year period than those who drank one cup of coffee or less per week.
