LBN- Special Report- Wednesday

*LBN- INVESTIGATES: The latest (combined) polling elections model suggests that Hillary Clinton is favored to win the presidency, based on the latest state and national polls. A victory by Mr. Trump remains quite possible: Mrs. Clinton’s chance of losing is about the same as the probability that an N.F.L. kicker misses a 47-yard field goal.

*New Debate Strategy for Donald Trump: Practice, Practice, Practice:
Campaign advisers to Donald J. Trump, concerned that his focus and objectives had dissolved during the first presidential debate on Monday, plan to more rigorously prepare him for his next face-off with Hillary Clinton by drilling the Republican nominee on crucial answers, facts and counterattacks, and by coaching him on ways to whack Mrs. Clinton on issues even if he is not asked about them. Whether he is open to practicing meticulously is a major concern, however, according to some of these advisers and others close to Mr. Trump. While analysts from both parties and several focus groups declared Mrs. Clinton the winner of the debate, Mr. Trump tried to claim that title for himself on Tuesday, citing unscientific online surveys, and told his advisers that he believed he had done well in the first half-hour of the 90-minute event.

*FINALLY – Pelosi, Ryan Reach Deal on Flint Aid:
House Speaker Paul Ryan and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosireached an agreement Tuesday night on an aid package for Flint, the Michigan city in the midst of a water crisis. The House will vote Wednesday on an amendment that would set aside $170 million for Flint. The Senate on Tuesday rejected a stopgap spending measure that would have kept the federal government open past Friday at midnight, thereby averting a shutdown. Many Democrats voted against the legislation because it did not include federal funding for Flint. The Senate passed a separate funding bill for Flint this month totaling $220 million. “It’s almost as if a few Democratic leaders decided long ago that bringing our country to the brink would make for good election-year politics, and then they’ve just made up the rationale as they go along,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said.

*Trayvon Martin’s Parents Sign Book Deal:
Trayvon Martin‘s parents Tracy Martin (L), and Sybrina Fulton enter the courtroom after a morning recess in George Zimmerman seconded-degree murder trial in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin in Seminole circuit court in Sanford, Florida, July 3, 2013.  Trayvon Martin’s parents are writing a book, which will publish in January—nearly five years after the teen died in Florida when he was shot by George Zimmerman. Zimmerman’s acquittal sparked protests all over the country. The book will be called ‘Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin,’ and it will hit shelves on Jan. 31. Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton’s book is to be edited by Christoper Jackson, of Random House’s One World imprint. “It first brings Trayvon back to life as the full, three-dimensional, complex kid he was, through his parents’ eyes,” Jackson said. “Everyone who’s been reading the manuscript is in tears by the second chapter.”

*5 Arrested in Suspected European ISIS Cell:
Five people have been arrested in Europe on suspicion of forming an “active and dangerous” ISIS terror cell. Spain’s interior ministry said Wednesday the five suspects promoted Islamist militancy in Spain, Belgium, and Germany. Of the group, four are Spanish and one is Moroccan. Officials said the five suspects ran a Facebook group out of Spain that promoted the terror group and even liaised between militants in Syria and others in Europe.

*LBN-BUSINESS INSIDER:   ***Wells Fargo announced on Tuesday that it would claw back compensation valued at $41 million from its embattled chairman and chief executive, John G. Stumpf, as the financial consequences of the scandal over illegally created sham accounts at the bank reached theexecutive suite. The action represented one of the first times since the 2008 financial crisis that a chief executive has been forced to give up compensation. Many large companies have adopted clawback provisions at the urging of regulators and shareholder advocates, but boards have been hesitant to invoke them. And it came one week after a blistering Senate hearing in which lawmakers criticized the company and its board for not holding its leaders financially accountable for the scandal.   ***Six years ago, Yahoo’s computer systems and customer email accounts were penetrated by Chinese military hackers. Google and a number of other technology companies were also hit. The Google co-founder Sergey Brin regarded the attack on his company’s systems as a personal affront and responded by making security a top corporate priority. Google hired hundreds of security engineers with six-figure signing bonuses, invested hundreds of millions of dollars in security infrastructure and adopted a new internal motto, “Never again,” to signal that it would never again allow anyone — be they spies or criminals — to hack into Google customers’ accounts. Yahoo, on the other hand, was slower to invest in the kinds of defenses necessary to thwart sophisticated hackers that are now considered standard in Silicon Valley, according to half a dozen current and former company employees who participated in security discussions but agreed to describe them only on the condition of anonymity.

*Former Israeli President Peres Dies:
Shimon Peres, who served as prime minister of Israel twice and as the country’s ninth president, died late Tuesday at the age of 93, two weeks after suffering a stroke. He was on a respirator in the hospital and his condition deteriorated. Peres was one of the architects of the Oslo peace accords that led to him winning the Nobel Peace Prize. He was the last surviving figure associated with Israel’s modern founding and went from being considered deeply divisive to extremely popular later in his political career.

*Arizona Paper Backs First Democrat Ever:
The Arizona Republic, which had never endorsed a Democrat for president since it began publishing in 1890, is backing Hillary Clinton in this election. Continuing a trend with many other major U.S. newspapers that typically back Republicans, the Republic editors wrote that “the 2016 Republican candidate is not conservative and he is not qualified… The challenges the United States faces domestically and internationally demand a steady hand, a cool head, and the ability to think carefully before acting. Hillary Clinton understands this. Donald Trumpdoes not. Clinton has the temperament and experience to be president. Donald Trump does not.”

*LBN-NOTICED:   ***A “very drunk” Jimmy Fallon rocked out at punk bar Manitoba’s in NYC on Monday. “He was at the end of the bar playing ’90s music on his phone,” a spy said. “He would have the bartender hook it up and start dancing. He was very drunk, cutting up and making people laugh.” The “Tonight Show” host didn’t leave till about 3 a.m.   ***Marilyn Manson at a Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel party for the new film “Masterminds.   ***Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and his daughter at Alfredo 100 in NYC.   ***Sandra Bernhard on the subway in NYC with Blondie’s Debbie Harry and Chris Stein taping the segment “Live From the M Train” for Bernhard’s SiriusXM show.   ***Actor Dabney Coleman viewing a special screening of the classic film “On Golden Pond” last night at the Crest Theatre in Westwood. Director Mark Rydell answered questions from the audience after the screening.

*LBN-HOLLYWOOD INSIDER:   ***Hollywood is buzzing about who could next be running Paramount Pictures amid all the changes at its parent company, Viacom — but the company insists it has full confidence in current chairman Brad Grey. Multiple sources say that the gossip is that Paramount Pictures boss Grey could be vulnerable, following the ousting of Philippe Dauman as Viacom CEO. Names being whispered around town as future contenders for the role include former 20th Century Fox boss Jim Gianopulos, producers Brian Grazer and John Goldwyn, former Lionsgate co-chair Rob Friedman and Jeffrey Katzenberg. Plus, there have been several others actively jockeying for the job. The move comes after box-office flops including “Ben-Hur,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Zoolander 2.” Paramount is also reportedly preparing for a loss ahead of the release of “Monster Trucks” in January. Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore was pushed out last week.

*WHO READS LBN? Actor Tom Hiddleston:

*Serena Williams Speaks Out on Police Shootings:

Tennis star Serena Williams chimed in on the spate of recent police shootings of young black men in a post on her Facebook page Tuesday, vowing she would not be “silent” on the issue. Williams said her 18-year-old nephew was driving her to a meeting when a sighting of a police officer scared her. “Then I remembered that horrible video of the woman in the car when a cop shot her boyfriend. All of this went through my mind in a matter of seconds,” Williams wrote. “I even regretted not driving myself. I would never forgive myself if something happened to my nephew. He’s so innocent. So were all ‘the others,’” she wrote. “Why did I have to think about this in 2016?”

*LBN- SPOTLIGHT: The Speech Every 2015 College Grad Needs to Hear—

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Thomas L. Friedman: My reaction to the Donald Trump-Hillary Clinton debate can be summarized with one word: “How?” How in the world do we put a man in the Oval Office who thinks NATO is a shopping mall where the tenants aren’t paying enough rent to the U.S. landlord? NATO is not a shopping mall; it is a strategic alliance that won the Cold War, keeps Europe a stable trading partner for U.S. companies and prevents every European country — particularly Germany — from getting their own nukes to counterbalance Russia, by sheltering them all under America’s nuclear umbrella. How do we put in the Oval Office a man who does not know enough “beef” about key policies to finish a two-minute answer on any issue without the hamburger helper of bluster, insults and repetition?

*LBN-INTEL FOR INFLUENCERS:

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Janelle Barlow, Ph.D.: Yuval Harari, author of the best-selling Sapiens, relates a prescient story about American astronauts training for the moon landing. They encounter two indigenous Americans, who upon learning about their mission, ask the astronauts to relay a message to the Moon people from whom their tribe had descended. “Sure,” say the astronauts and memorize the message in the Indian’s tribal language. Back at their base, the astronauts meet someone from the same tribe and ask for a translation. The man hoots with laughter and says, “They asked you to say, ‘Don’t believe a word they say. They’re here to take your land.’”

*LBN-A DIFFERENT VIEW:….

*LBN-OVERHEARD:   ***Lin-Manuel Miranda is not throwing away his shot to host “Saturday Night Live.”The Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Pulitzer Prize-award winning “Hamilton” actor/auteur is set to host the Oct. 8 telecast alongside musical guest Twenty One Pilots, who will be joined by Miranda. This will mark Miranda’s “SNL” hosting debut.   ***With Hollywood couples splitting up left and right these days, Goldie Hawn is glad she never tied the knot. In fact, the 70-year-old actress said the secret to her 33-year relationship to fellow actor Kurt Russell is that they never made it down the aisle. “I would have been long divorced if I got married,” Hawn said on Britain’s ITV “Loose Women” Monday. “If you need to be bound to someone, then it’s important to be married,” she shared. “If you are independent, then it’s important to not be married.   ***Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore says he’s not allowed to perform a one-man show about the presidential race at a central Ohio theater because officials there consider him too controversial. Moore says in a Facebook post that Newark’s Midland Theatre “banned” him from presenting and filming the show there next month. He says the community board overseeing the theater recently voted not to allow the show.   ***You can call Warren Beatty all sorts of things, like actor or director — just don’t call him a “manslut.” In his first interview in nearly two decades, the actor made clear that reports that he’s bedded some 12,775 women during his 79 years are wildly exaggerated. “Think about it, sleeping with 12,775 people,” the Hollywood legend recently told AARP The Magazine. “That would mean not just that there were multiple people a day, but that there was no repetition.” The number was first attached to Beatty because of Peter Biskind’s 2010 biography of the “Bonnie and Clyde” actor, “Star.” “12,775 women, give or take, a figure that does not include daytime quickies, drive-bys, casual gropings, stolen kisses and so on,” the author deduced in the book.

LBN- Special Report- Tuesday

*Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump Press Pointed Attacks in Debate:
In a relentlessly antagonistic debate, Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton clashed over trade, the Iraq war, his refusal to release his tax returns and her use of a private email server, with Mr. Trump frequently showing impatience andpolitical inexperience as Mrs. Clinton pushed him to defend his past denigration of women and President Obama. Mr. Trump repeatedly interrupted Mrs. Clinton and at times talked over her throughout the 90-minute debate, making slashing attacks that surely pleased his Republican base but may have been off-putting to women and undecided voters. He also left unchallenged her assertion that he paid no federal taxes for years. For her part, Mrs. Clinton repeatedly chided Mr. Trump for bungling his facts while accusing him of hiding information about his debts to Wall Street and foreign banks. Mr. Trump’s strongest moments came early in the evening, when he put Mrs. Clinton on the defensive over her support for free trade agreements that he argues have cost Americans jobs.

*LBN-INVESTIGATES: Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump kept fact-checkers busy throughout their first debate on Monday night as they sparred over their policies and records on the economy, national security, the environment and their personal pasts. In keeping with how he has run his campaign, Mr. Trump stretched the facts more often than Mrs. Clinton did.

*NEXT TIME – Trump Threatens to Bring Up Bill Clinton’s ‘Indiscretions’:
Immediately following the first presidential debate, Donald Trump revealed to Fox News host Sean Hannity that he would have liked to have brought up Hillary Clinton’s personal life, but “I didn’t want to say—her husband was in the room along with her daughter, who I think is a very nice young lady—and I didn’t want to say what I was going to say about what’s been going on in their life,” he ever-so-unsubtly hinted at Bill Clinton’s alleged sexual misconduct throughout his career. “I decided not to say it. I thought it would be very disrespectful to Chelsea and maybe to the family. But she said very bad things about me… it’s a disgrace.” Several minutes later, while appearing on CNN, Trump said, “I was able to hold back on the indiscretions,” and then suggested he will not do the same during the second presidential debate. Top surrogate Rudy Giuliani echoed the narrative during a spin-room interview, telling reporters, “I know he would have liked to have said—except for the fact that Chelsea Clinton was in the audience—and that is that [Hillary Clinton] enabled and supported a president who is a disgrace to the White House.”

*Marlins Pay Emotional Tribute to José Fernández:
In their first game since the death of José Fernández, the Miami Marlins paid emotional tribute to their ace pitcher with a variety of heartbreaking gestures. Before the game, Marlins players stood around the mound, which had his number, 16, painted on the back side, before a tribute clip rolled on the stadium’s big screen. Several players could be seen crying during the pre-game broadcast, and more tears were shed as a somber version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” was played on a trumpet. The tributes continued during the actual gameplay, as Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon—normally a left-hander—led off the bottom of the first inning by standing in the right side of the batter’s box for the first pitch, while wearing Fernández’s batting helmet. He then swapped it out for his own, moving to the correct side of the plate, and smashing a home run on the second pitch against the New York Mets.

*DISGRACE – Wells Fargo Workers Claim Retaliation for Playing by the Rules:
At least 5,300 Wells Fargo employees have been fired for ethics violations like setting up illicit accounts without customers’ knowledge to meet sales targets. Now there’s another group of aggrieved Wells Fargo workers: people who say they were fired or demoted for staying honest and falling short of sales goals they say were unrealistic. That second group of workers, who claim that they played by the rules and were punished for it, are starting to coalesce around two lawsuits that were just filed and that seek class-action status. The first was filed in Los Angeles last week by former Wells Fargo workers who say that while their colleagues created unauthorized accounts to meet cross-selling quotas, they were penalized or terminated for refusing to do the same. The bank’s chief executive, John Stumpf, has often stated his goal that each Wells customer should have at least eight accounts with the company. That aggressive target has made the bank’s stock a darling on Wall Street, the lawsuit notes. On Monday, a federal lawsuit with analogous claims was filed in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, seeking to create a class of current and former Wells employees across the country who had similar experiences. “These are the people who have been left holding the bag,” said Jonathan Delshad, the lawyer representing the workers in both suits. “It was a revolving door. If you weren’t willing to engage in these types of illegal practices, they just booted you out the door and replaced you.”

*LeBron Supports Colin Kaepernick’s Protest:
LeBron James on Monday said he supports NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s public protest against racial inequality and has been horrified by recent police shootings. But the NBA star does not plan to show his support for Kaepernick by kneeling during the national anthem, he said. “I’m not here to ramp on America, that’s not me,” James said in an interview with the Associated Press. “I’m not a politician, but I’ve lived this life and I’ve got a family and what scares me is my kids growing up in this society right now, where innocent lives are being taken and it seems like nothing is being done.” He went on to say he respects the San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s controversial protest against recent police violence. “I’m all in favor of anyone, athlete or non-athlete, being able to express what they believe in in a peaceful manner and that’s exactly what Colin Kaepernick is doing and I respect that,” James said. “When I’m passionate about something, I’ll speak up on it, so me standing for the national anthem is something I will do.”

The onetime “Hills” star, 33, launched into anexpletive-laden tirade at the Laguna Hills Marriott on Sunday, according to sources. *LBN-R.I.P.:   ***Pioneering horror filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis has died in his sleep at the age of 87, a spokesman confirmed. Lewis, dubbed the Godfather of Gore, paved the way for the horror genre in the 1960s, with a string of bloody, violent movies that came to be known as “splatter films” and influenced modern directors like Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and John Waters. Among Lewis’s best-known films were Blood FeastThe Gruesome TwosomeA Taste of Blood, and Two Thousand Maniacs. Director James Gunn wrote on Twitter that Lewis’s work “changed cinema.” He was in his home in Florida when he died.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by David Brooks: In the normal telling, history is driven by visionaries and revolutionaries. If you studied history in school you probably plowed through book after book about this revolution or that one — the American Revolution or the French, the industrial revolution or the information one. In the normal telling of the past, events are driven by revolutionaries, and the few reactionaries who stand in the way get run over. But really, history is often a volley between revolutionaries (who take control in some periods) and reactionaries (who drive events in others). Today, as the Columbia political theorist Mark Lilla points out in his compelling new book, “The Shipwrecked Mind: On Political Reaction,” reactionaries are in the saddle. Reactionaries, whether angry white Trumpians, European nationalists, radical Islamists or left-wing anti-globalists, are loud, self-confident and on the march. Reactionaries come in different stripes but share a similar mentality: There was once a golden age, when people knew their place and lived in harmony. But then that golden age was betrayed by the elites. “The betrayal of elites is the linchpin of every reactionary story,” Lilla writes.

*LBN-COMMENTARY by Robert Herbeck: If you’re going to report this sort of thing … you best look at both sides … Hillary once again … getting a pass on the Clinton’s smarmy world … we are paying for her travel tab as well … and you make no mention of her getting a free ride on AF One at our expense recently with Obama. It is all so bad and the reason so many don’t even want to vote. The media continues to go soft on the Billary’s …and their laundry list of digression’s. Bill is treated like a rock star. He is a lying scumbag … as is Hillary. But you and the media give them a pass. By the way. I am not a Trump supporter … nor will I vote for him … or the other slime ball. But tell it like is.

*LBN-COMMENTARY By JAMES PONIEWOZIK: The split screen told the story at the first 2016 presidential debate, and it was not kind to Donald J. Trump. At the right was his opponent, Hillary Clinton, a practiced one-on-one debater, who held long, studied gazes on her opponent, delivered calibrated attacks and turned to the audience to smile incredulously at his responses. At the left was Mr. Trump, the volatile presence who alpha-dogged a season of Republican debates. Now he grimaced, squinted, nodded, pursued his lips, sniffed, huffed and interrupted, becoming, over the night, an agitated man in a box. This seemed to be by Mrs. Clinton’s design. She had reportedly prepared to face two different versions of her opponent. There might be a reserved Mr. Trump, ready to reassure voters about his self-control. Or there might be the raging, ranting Mr. Trump of the primaries.
